Sunshine has many opportunities to honor and remember those who have passed away including: engraved bricks for our walkway, plaques for the garden, decorative garden statues, etc.
Chris Dalske
In Loving Memory of Christopher A. Dalske – We Miss YOU! Gone but NOT forgotten. Dr. Carter’s nephew Chris passed away in 2001 by suicide. He loved children, loved life, and loved his family and friends. Since his death her mission has grown stronger to help teens and young adults, to let them know that there are others too who understand their challenges and difficulties, and who are there for them. The C.A.D. Memorial Scholarship was created to support suicide awareness and education. Saying: “Those who die by suicide die one death; those left behind die a thousand deaths”.
Craig A. Dalske was Dr. Carter’s brother-in-law. He was a dedicated supporter of Sunshine and the work we do. Craig underwent a lung transplant and sadly had a lot of complications.
He passed away peacefully on August 5, 2021. Craig was a devoted husband of 46 years to Kristi (Dr. Carter’s sister), cherished father to Megan, Chris, Justin, and Donna, a doting grandfather to Nickolas, Gianna and Asher. Craig will be missed deeply!!!
A special memorial angel will be placed in our Victoria Ruvolo Memorial Garden at Sunshine in memory of Craig.
Donations can be made in memory of a loved one and will directly support a child or family in need.

Gabriel’s Giving Tree – Recovery Park
Last May, 2021 I had the opportunity to be at the dedication of the new Recovery Park to all those touched in some way by loss due to drugs or alcohol. The Recovery Park is located at the Suffolk County Environmental Center at Scully Estate in East Islip, which is such a Beautiful, serene place. So, when my friend Marilyn’s son – Matthew Nobel passed away, what a great way for us to support the family and honor his memory, by planting a tree. We also planted flowers in memory of Matthew and Robert Lelle in their Zen Garden. Paulette, Lori and Claudia right away gave their time and dedication to this, ordering plants, delivering items, lining up volunteers and helping us plant the tree and flowers. This park is a Beautiful place to go and walk, pray, meditate and relax. Erin from Thrive runs a garden club their on Thursdays and they are in need of volunteers to help take care of the gardens, water the plants and weed. If you can help in any way, see Paulette

Irena Costanzo
In loving memory of Irena Costanzo: Every year we pick a theme that means something special to us and we design a logo for our t-shirts. This year our theme, “The World is in Your Hands” was designed in memory of Irena Costanzo. Irena worked with us the summer of 2015. She was a beautiful, creative, compassionate 16-year-old. We all felt she was an old soul as she was well beyond her years. The children loved her, and she made such an impact on all of us at Sunshine that summer, that we asked her to stay on through the school year.
Since we were “brightening up” our center we asked if she could paint a mural on one of our upstairs rooms, to use her own creativity in the design. In a matter of hours she had created an amazing globe with words of hope, faith and peace. Irena passed away last year. We wanted so much to let others know how amazing Irena was, and though she was only on this earth for a very short time, she made a positive impact in so many lives at Sunshine. A contest was held to draw their version of the globe for our t-shirt logo. The winner was one of our LIU art therapy interns. (see above design). Schwab 2nd Wind created and printed the t-shirts which were given to each child this summer. Sunshine works hard to continue to fight this war on drugs, providing hope and support to families who are suffering.
