Children learn healthy expression of feelings through puppets, songs, and fun activities.

It is extremely important for children to have a full range of feelings vocabulary and to begin talking about their feelings at an early age (guided by adults). Parents can help a child identify their feelings and emotions by supplying them with a choice of feelings: Are you feeling angry, sad, upset, sad, tired, happy, etc. Talk about good feelings and uncomfortable feelings, so the whole range of feelings and emotions can be shared experiences. If children can verbalize and share their feelings from a young age, they will have an easier time sharing these feelings as they get older and face bigger challenges.

Reviews

This book is truly a helpful tool that can be used for children who are in need of understanding, comfort and love. Knowing they are not alone and it is OK to open up and share their feelings because there are other children and families who are just like them, going through the same thing…confused, sad and ashamed. This book explains and helps them to open up. I bought several copies. I gave few to others who I thought would benefit from it or put it to good use. Either for their own needs or able to share it with someone they know might be in a similar situation. I also gave a few to professionals to share in their work environment. They are around children, and I know they would be able to see the signs. As you mentioned in the book it is for families that are struggling and sharing Javier’s story with others will give support and hope. – Anita Carter

I have personally struggled with drug addiction and have a child. Although my daughter never saw me on drugs through the years, recently she has. I didn’t know how to talk to her about it or explain to her what she had witnessed in a way that we would understand. I decided to read the book titled “Javier’s Sister”. It is a book about a family’s struggle with drug addiction. It truly helped her understand in a way that I could never have made it that clean. She opened up and finally asked questions. It was the first time we talked about what had happened. I feel this book was extremely helpful in helping children understand the problem. Dr Carter has been very helpful through this tough time in our lives.

I am a Special Educator for the WCA Head Start program in Westmoreland County, PA. I bought a copy of the book “Javier’s sister- A Family’s Struggle with Drug Addiction” by Dr. Carol Carter, because our county has seen a major uptick of drug use and overdoses. Unfortunately, some of our preschoolers are directly involved; whether it is seeing drug use in or around their homes, their homes being raided by the police, or even seeing the aftermath of an overdose by a family member or family friend. It has been very difficult to talk to the children about their experiences. Typically, our teaching staff use books to introduce a tough topic like drugs, but there are not any, we have seen, that are appropriate on this topic. The way the story is worded gives the teacher the right way to approach this scary subject. Not all our young children can sit and listen to a word book. I like that not only is the book written so that the children can begin to comprehend the topic but the pictures in this book are simple and easy to use with 3–5 year olds who have trouble sitting for any length of time.
